JoomlaWorks has been around for many years. Since 2006 to be exact.

Since then we've grown a lot and that includes the communities we operate and the code we write...

In an effort to produce great extensions, we decided it's time to cut down some older extensions. And we want your feedback here...

We already consider extensions like K2, AllVideos, Simple Image Gallery, Simple RSS Feed Reader, Disqus Comments and all our commercial stuff indispensable for the Joomla! community. We are working hard to bring all those up to date with the latest Joomla! releases and we have plans to make them even better in the future. And we have plans for some bigger projects, which will require more time from us.

We are also building a new "super plugin" which will basically merge the functionality provided by the "Extended Cache & CDN", Tidy & Ultimate PNG Fix plugins and introduce some cool new features, producing a plugin which will "prepare" any Joomla! website for going into "production" mode. A "utilities" plugin which we are already testing on our projects and which we plan to share with everyone, for free.

So that leaves us with the extensions on the poll you see on the right...

Version 2.2 of Simple Image Gallery is now available to download. This version fixes a bug which prevented language strings from being displayed properly in servers running Joomla! 1.5 on PHP 5.2.x.

We've also decided to completely separate the plugin into 2 different distributions, one for Joomla! 1.5 and one for 1.6, as this allows for more freedom in tweaking the plugin for each Joomla! version respectively.

2.2 also comes with some minor improvements, namely the addition of the image filename in the alt/title attributes of the gallery links (for a little better SEO) and the change of the use of tags in favor of tags (to make CSS rendering faster on all browsers).

Today we're releasing v2.9 of Frontpage Slideshow (standalone edition remains unchanged). This new version adds minor improvement to the code, but most importantly, it adds a new performance feature.

Today we're releasing v2.9 of Frontpage Slideshow (standalone edition remains unchanged). This new version adds minor improvement to the code, but most importantly, it adds a new performance feature.

This new feature uses a web service based on Google's infrastructure to optimize the size of all slideshow images. The results can be breathtaking... up to 75% decrease in total image size. If your site uses big images you can surely benefit from the option. Please note that since this feature depends on a web service, we consider it "experimental", so use with caution.

Note: Minor update to v2.9.1 which adds the "width" option to optimized images, if the related setting in the module is on.

If you already own a Frontpage Slideshow v2 license, just login to our PDS system or use your purchase download link (if you just bought the extension) to download this latest update. 2011 Bundle owners can do the same thing, their master zip file has been upgraded to include these latest versions.

Please note that this is the last 2.x version. Within the coming weeks we're introducing Frontpage Slideshow version 3, which adds many new features and content sources to create amazing slideshows! Existing customers will engoy this as a free upgrade per our current terms and conditions. :)

This new release adds/fixes the following...

For the Joomla! version (v2.7):
- Plugin tags are now properly stripped in the module
- Fixed a language string error in the module
- Updated class.upload.php to v0.30 - this fixes upload issues related to PHP v5.3.x
- IMPORTANT: Changed title/introtext behaviour: if a slide links to an article or menu item but the custom text box is not empty, the slideshow will use the "slide title" and "slide custom text" as title and introtext (respectively) for the output. Previously, only the "custom text" input would override an article's contents.
- Full Mootools 1.2 support (thanks to our friends at Yireo.com)
- Updated sample data
- Slight improvements to the CSS file of the Movies template

It's been a great tool for us the past year so we decided to release this cool little plugin to the public.

The "Extended Cache & CDN" plugin for Joomla! 1.5.x is based upon the default Joomla! "Page Cache" plugin but it extends it in such a way so you have more control over what is cached. Furthermore, it helps you do the necessary domain replacements if you decide to go big and use a CDN solution.

It's been a great tool for us the past year so we decided to release this cool little plugin to the public.

The "Extended Cache & CDN" plugin for Joomla! 1.5.x is based upon the default Joomla! "Page Cache" plugin but it extends it in such a way so you have more control over what is cached. Furthermore, it helps you do the necessary domain replacements if you decide to go big and use a CDN solution.

In more detail, the plugin allows you to select which components' content will not be cached. This is especially helpful for components that interact with the user, like com_user or com_contact which require user input. The default page cache plugin excludes just com_user by default. So you can use the plugin to exclude any component you want from being cached by Joomla!.

The CDN aspect of the plugin is quite easy to setup as well. You can see its parameters on your right...

The plugin will ask you for the origin and the CDN domain. When you setup a CDN system like Voxel's VoxCast CDN (using it already in our projects - highly reliable), Softlayer's CloudLayer CDN (using it already in our projects) or MaxCDN (very competitive pricing) you are required to setup a CNAME record that point your www. subdomain to the CDN provider's infrastructure. E.g. on Voxel you setup www. to point to XXXX.voxcdn.net. This redirects all traffic from your users to Voxel's CDN. But Voxel requires a way to fetch content from your server: enter a subdomain like direct.domain.tld (an A record in your domain's DNS setup) that basically points to the same folder in your server as your old www. subdomain did. Of course you need to delete www from your A records. In that case, you would use direct.domain.tld as the "origin domain" in the plugin and "www.domain.tld" as the "CDN domain". Users click on www.domain.tld and they get server content from the CDN provider which was originally fetched from direct.domain.tld.

Confusing? Maybe. Benefits? Enormous.

You basically not only serve content to your users faster (from geographically nearer locations) but you also get a cluster of servers protecting and load balancing yours. Gone are the days (and the headaches) when you had to setup a cluster of a few thousand dollars worth of servers just to serve a few thousand concurrent users. With a CDN your site (any site) can scale.

With our plugin the process in setting up a CDN for Joomla! is really a piece of cake, after you setup everything correctly with your A/CNAME records and your CDN provider.

You will also be glad to know that this plugin is already used in Joomla! websites with extremely high traffic like gazzetta.gr, tnawrestling.com, reporter.gr, monopoli.gr or paokmania.gr.

A few helpful tips

If you install this system plugin and have Joomla!'s default "Page Cache" plugin on, you need to turn the last one off (unpublish it). It's good to make sure the plugin is listed as last one in your system plugins list. A CDN is obviously required for this plugin to work properly. You can set the plugin's cache time to 2-3 mins. Your Joomla! cache time set globally in Global Configuration should be bigger than the plugin's cache, at least 5 or 10 mins. If you use K2 you can have the cache time in Global Configuration set even higher, to 15 or 20 mins, because K2 handles the cache better (when you add or edit a K2 item it doesn't flush the entire cache like com_content does!)... When you set your A and CNAME records to hook up the CDN, adjust the TTL to 15 mins. If you stumble on issues, you can quickly revert back without your visitors noticing.

Something impossible in Virtuemart up to now (well, Virtuemart can provide sales statistics, but they are "accountant" style boring statistics)...

But it's not just that...

Your Joomla! control panel (the first page you see when you login as an administrator) is also dead boring. So we thought "why not ease your e-commerce management experience and save some clicks"? And so we brought the K2mart Virtuemart sales stats on the Joomla! control panel as well.

Better image handling

We have also improved the Virtuemart image importing options in K2mart. Up to now, we only offered one option: import VM images on the first product import/sync to K2. But e-shops with hundreds or even thousands of products (and associated images) would have a hard time importing those images into K2. This comes down basically to server resources and how much control you got over your server. So we re-devised the way VM product images are imported as K2 item images and we have added these new options in the new K2mart component parameters:
- you can select to directly link to your Virtuemart stored images (and fit into K2 with HTML resizing) or
- you can import your Virtuemart stored images as K2 item images.

The real difference compared to the importing method in the Virtuemart Migrator page is that this occurs on "runtime". So instead of doing the import as a one-time job (with the Virtuemart Migrator page in K2mart), you let your e-shop visitors help you out: whenever they visit a K2 product page, K2mart will dynamically pull and resize the Virtuemart image. For more info on these new image import handling features, please consult the K2mart documentation page.

In v1.3 we have also done the following:
- brought advanced product attribute editing inside the K2 item form
- there is a new optional 6th tab (called 'advanced'), which you can enable inside the K2 item form that allows a user to:
1. Assign/unassign an existing Virtuemart product to a K2 item
2. Edit a product directly in Virtuemart
3. Delete the product from the Virtuemart database
- added an option for showing the Virtuemart category tree in the K2 item form so a user can choose which Virtuemart category the product will be saved into.
- fixed issue causing K2mart to loose some Virtuemart product data, when saving the product in K2, as well as other several minor issues as reported by users in the forum.

Upgrading and more...

If you are upgrading from a previous K2mart version, just install v1.3 on top of the previous one. After that, if you have the Joomla! cache option enabled, navigate to Tools >> Clean Cache in the admin and make sure you cleanup your site's cache entirely.

We have updated the "standalone" edition of Frontpage Slideshow to v2.0, bringing it up to date with the code improvements found on the Joomla! package.

This new version introduces an "MVC like" template structure, new improved JavaScript and CSS code, better handling, easy setup as usual. All files are saved as UTF-8 encoded so you shouldn't have an issue with non-English slideshows (previously an issue).

Today we're releasing v1.2 of K2mart. This new version fixes an issue in K2mart, regarding the proper redirection of VirtueMart cart/checkout pages back to K2. This issue occurs only when there is an active menu item (link) pointing directly to the VirtueMart component and the Joomla! SEF settings are on.

In that case, K2mart was unable to properly redirect back to K2 e.g. when a visitor clicked on a product item in the VirtueMart cart list.

Version 1.2 solves this redirection issue.

If you are upgrading from a previous K2mart version, just install v1.2 on top of the previous one. After that, if you have the Joomla! cache option enabled, navigate to Tools >> Clean Cache in the admin and make sure you cleanup your site's cache entirely.
